What is the 'National Grid area' and why aren't I in it?

The UK's power networks are operated by 'distribution network operators' or DNOs, of which National Grid is one. This application works by using the data gathered by National Grid to measure the attached generation sources and load that occurs on each local substation, so we can only show you the data from the substations within the National Grid area.

This area includes the East & West Midlands, South Wales and the South West.

Some people could find that their local substation might be inside the National Grid area - usually on the edge of it - but that we cannot retrieve the data for the local generation mix. This is because it is supplied by a different distribution network operator.
